Tell us the style, the fabrics, your lettering and your quantity. We’ll come back within 24 hours with fabric recommendations, a tech pack direction and clear pricing.
A varsity jacket isn’t bought for a season — it’s kept for twenty years, worn at reunions and handed down. That changes what it has to be made of. Axis Sportswear is a cut-and-sew custom varsity jacket manufacturer producing Melton wool bodies, genuine and faux leather sleeves, chenille lettering, and full private-label finishing for schools, universities, clubs, teamwear suppliers, and streetwear brands across the USA, UK, and Europe.
Nothing here is a blank with a patch stuck on it. You choose the wool weight, the sleeve leather and its thickness, the rib knit stripe pattern, the snap or zip front, the lining, the pocket layout and every patch on the jacket. Chenille letters, bullion badges and embroidery are all produced in-house. Minimums start at 50 pieces, tech pack development is free, and your first sample ships in 10–14 days.
Three decisions separate a varsity jacket people keep from one that ends up in a charity shop. We work through all three before a single panel is cut.
Send a tech pack, a sketch, Pantone references, or a jacket you already sell and want improved. Our design team returns a production-ready spec showing body and sleeve colours, rib knit stripe sequence, snap or zip front, pocket type, lining and the exact position and size of every patch. You approve the mockup before sampling starts, so nothing is left to interpretation.
Varsity jackets are worn deliberately roomy, and the amount of room is a design decision, not an accident. We grade three blocks — classic campus (true to size with a relaxed body), oversized streetwear (dropped shoulder, wider body, shorter length) and fitted (closer through the chest, common on women’s and fashion lines). Youth 6 through adult 4XL, with separate men’s and women’s patterns.
Every style below is made to order in your fabrics, colours and branding. Mix styles across a single production run to build a full outerwear capsule.
The traditional build: 24–32 oz Melton wool body, full-grain or lambskin leather sleeves, ribbed knit collar, cuffs and hem, snap-front closure and a quilted lining. The specification US high schools and colleges expect, and the one that photographs best.
Melton wool body and sleeves with contrast rib trim. Warmer and lower cost than a leather-sleeve build, and the standard choice for UK and European university and society jackets.
PU sleeves at 0.8–1.0 mm on a wool or poly twill body. Consistent colour batch to batch, lighter, and the required option for vegan and sustainability-led brands. Increasingly requested by European retailers.
Fabric is the biggest driver of both cost and perceived quality on a varsity jacket, and wool weight in particular is what separates an heirloom jacket from a thin one. Here’s what we stock and what each is genuinely good for. Ask for a physical swatch pack before committing to a run.
Linings available: quilted polyester (standard), satin, quilted sherpa for cold climates, and unlined for satin and fleece styles. Finishes: anti-pill wool treatment · water-repellent DWR on twill and satin · leather conditioning · brushed interior.
Varsity jackets carry more development cost than almost anything else we make — more panels, heavier trims, patch production, and a leather supply chain running alongside the wool one. That’s exactly why most factories set painful minimums on them. We don’t. Our pricing is structured so a new brand can test one style at 50 pieces and a school supplier can scale the same jacket to two thousand without changing partner.
50 pieces per style and colourway, with sizes mixed freely inside that quantity — youth 8 through adult 4XL across men's and women's blocks in one order.
Per-unit cost drops at 200, 500, 1,000 and 2,500 units. Because we're the factory, the saving reaches you directly — no trading house or agent margin in between.
Run a wool letterman, a satin style and a fleece varsity in one production batch and share the setup, trim and shipping cost across all three instead of paying it three times.

Nothing that leaves our floor carries our name. Every private label order arrives ready to go straight onto your shelf or into your fulfilment centre.
A streetwear label testing its first varsity drop, a school ordering for one graduating class, and a teamwear distributor supplying forty schools have completely different problems, and one rigid minimum serves none of them. Start with 50 pieces to validate a style with your audience, come back at 500 once it sells through, and move to scheduled annual production when your forecast becomes predictable. Because your patterns and patch artwork stay on file, every reorder skips development and goes straight into production — faster turnaround, and no repeated setup cost.

Varsity fabrics behave nothing like jersey. Here’s what works on what — see all our printing methods.
The signature varsity finish. Textured yarn on a felt base, bordered and stitched down. Only viable on stable woven fabrics — wool, twill and heavier satin.
Durable and premium across every varsity fabric. On melton wool we add a backing layer so stitches sit above the nap. On leather, needle placement is planned to avoid perforating a stress line.
Hand-wound metallic thread on felt. The most expensive and most impressive option, reserved for crests and alumni pieces.
Cut fabric letters stitched down. The most cost-effective route for large back wordmarks and the traditional look for numbers.
Cost-effective for bold graphics on satin, twill and fleece varsity styles. Not suitable for melton wool, where the nap prevents a clean print edge.
Thin and flexible, correct for small sharp text on satin and coated fabrics. We do not use heat transfer alone for primary chest lettering on wool — it lifts.
